I have had the following on my phone so I don't forget and I am going to put them here to archive them!
My Boy (Age 4)
My boy to Me: "I am firing you from my love life!"
My Boy (Age 6)
Me: Do you love me?
My Boy: Yes
Me: How much?
My Boy: I'm not telling you. You have to google it.
My Boy (Age 7)
My boy to Me: "Since I am the handyman of the house . . ."
My Girl (Age 9)
Me: You can do whatever you want, just do it well.
My Girl [rolling eyes]: You always say that!

Racing time
I feel like I am always racing the clock. Go here. Go there. Do this. Do that. And it just seems to get worse as the days pass. I am holding on to hope that one day I will just slow down.
I envy my older neighbors with grown children - many of their children my age or not far behind me. They just seem to enjoy life, their surroundings, their food, the air. They move slower, look more relaxed, seem so content. For just one weekend I want to be like them. I want to spend all weekend just leisurely painting a bedroom listening to the music I want to listen too. I want to cook a full meal with my husband and eat it slowly in silence while I drink glass of wine. I want to work in my yard all day and just enjoy the plants, get dirt all over me and then kick back with a beer afterwards.
In retrospect, I used to do all those things before I had kids. But now, I am running full speed all the time. And it is tiring. We are told as parents to slow down and enjoy all the moments with our kids but I feel sometimes those moments are measured and limited by the clock.
Sure one day I will be like my empty nest neighbors. And I will want to go back to when my kids were little. I know that. But, I need to figure out how to slow down the clock so I can at least catch my breath.

One worth logging . . .
I sent an email today to My Girl's teacher about whether they were going to have show-n-tell this friday and if I should send something. I had to post her response because it made me laugh out loud!
"Yes we will do show and tell Friday. Last week was too crazy with earth and science day. Please send something…[My Girl] will get something out of the garbage to talk about if you don’t!! She doesn’t miss an opportunity for a spotlight!"
Figures.

Being Two.
My two year old is amusing us daily! He says things that make my hubby and I just share "The look" and laugh.
The last two days he has been telling us over and over that "I no like hot water. I like warm water. Hot water is for girls."
Or
"I no like that dip. That dip too spicy for me."
He is so adorable! He is a gem. I know. He is my boy. I get to say that about him and you, being my reader, get to read it!
Tonight, he wanted to lay with me at bedtime. We have a new rule that neither parent lies with either child at bedtime anymore. So I asked Sissy if she would let him lay with her. She was very reluctant. But being the good sister that she is she obliged. Right now, the two of them are snuggled in her bed together sleeping soundly and it is sweet enough to melt a mother's heart.
I love my kids.

Santa Delivered - in a big way!

If you read my post yesterday you will see that my daughter REALLY wanted snow for Christmas. Well, dear Santa delivered and in a very big way!
At 7:15am this morning my daughter came into our bedroom screaming "It is snowing! It is snowing!" I quickly got up and said, "No way." She said, "Yes it is! Everything is white!" It was then that I knew she was not lying because she wouldn't know to describe it that way. Sure enough the first glimpse I got was through the French doors to the backyard and there it was. Snow. White fluffy snow. Haven't see it in 4 years.
My daughter was beside herself with excitement. Her one Christmas wish had just come true in the most unlikely places - Louisiana. I kept telling her it would be highly unlikely that she would see snow down here and that one day I would take her to Nana's in Ohio during Jan or Feb when they are most likely going to have snow. Even they don't always get snow in December.
I called my friend L immediately and she said her boys were out rolling in it while still in their PJs. She said she had tears in her eyes. She has never seen so much snow. I called my friend K next. She too has lived here all her life and could not believe it. She too said she has never seen that much snow - and we were just at the beginning when it was just a dusting sticking only to the grass and shrubs. There was a lot more to come as the morning went on! At least 3 inches. Possibly 5!
The kids ran outside first in just their PJs, shoes and a coat. Eventually it was too cold and I had to bundle them up so they could really go out and play, make snow angels and even sled! The neighbor called and said she had a sled she only used for Christmas decoration. She left it out back for us to use. And we did! I pulled the kids down the street. A neighbor couldn't believe we had a sled and took a picture of us. It was quite funny. Being a northerner it was not a huge deal to me but I got caught up in the fact that it was so unusual for down here and the excitement of everyone around me.
I took pictures of all my neighbors houses covered in snow so I can give it to them as a gift to remember the big snow day!
L called me a little later in the morning and was very concerned about her Crepe Myrtles breaking as they were weighted down and touching the ground because of the heavy wet snow. I said, "L, just go outside and shake the snow off them and they will bounce right back up." She said, "Oh! I never thought of that. I am going out there right now and will call you back!" I just laughed out loud!
K wouldn't let her kids get on the bus or drive because she said people down here don't know how to drive in snow and she wasn't putting her kids at risk. I couldn't agree more! We had lots of accidents by 8am.
All I can say is thay my girl wished and she got it. If you don't believe in Santa you should! Maybe it wasn't December 25th but we will take the 11th.
And to all my NOLA readers here is a little tip. Don't eat the yellow or brown snow!
Happy Holidays Everyone!

What happened to my boy?
My Boy is almost 2.5 years. He was always this very sweet, obedient, calm, agreeable and funny child. Then one day last week something blew up in his head apparently and now he is becoming a little devil!
He climbs up on the counters and gets into my cabinets. He pushes the barstool over the fridge, opens the doors (bottom freezer type) and stands inside the refrigerator looking for something to eat and THROWS out what he doesn't want on the floor!
He has broken our DVD player, multiple toys, the air pump and more!
It is not like he suddenly became mobile or anything. It is like he took the crazy pill. He has gotten bossy. He throws temper tantrums. He is constantly looking for food in the fridge and freezer. He yells at me. He is demanding!
I had it with him tonight and as we always do we laid down togther in my bed for bedtime. He falls asleep there and then I move him into his bed. I was laying next to him. He reached over and grabbed a hunk of my hair. He always holds my hair and sucks my thumb to go to sleep. He said, "Mommy, I over here." I laughed and moved closer to him. He said, "I need to kiss sissy." So I called sissy in for a good night kiss. Then, he laid there silently just kicking his legs and trying to go to sleep. Suddenly, out of no where he sits up and puts his face really close to mine and says, "Hi mommy!" I said hello back and laughed. He gave me a kiss and laid back down. He was out in a heart beat but not with out going under while singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. Eventually, the words faded and I picked him up and put him in his bed. There was my sweet boy I remember.

Weekend Wrapup
Wow. I just realized it has been over a week since I last posted. I didn't even realize it.
So today is Memorial Day and we had a family 3 day weekend. Just the four of us. We didn't do anything special. Just hung out. Here is a quick off the top of my head rundown.
- We went to Free Music Friday at the Mandeville Trailhead and had a blast! The boy really loved the music and running back and forth between the stage and our chairs. They ate snowballs and chips. The hubs and I drank a few beers! Great time.
- We swam at Franco's all three days. My Girl significantly improved at swimming in just this weekend alone. She suddenly started swimming underwater and we had a blast together going under and touching the bottom and making hand signs. Today was free waterslide day for member's at Franco's. My Girl went down for the first time ever and absolutely loved it! We had a blast taking turns going down with her.
- We did a lot of laundry that is still sitting on my "laundry" couch waiting to be folded or put away.
- We rode bikes on Sunday night and listened to the kids fight in the trailer the whole time.
- We went to Sam's club & Academy on Sunday morning because it was hot out when we woke up and we thought that was the best plan. Didn't buy much.
- The boy decided his new favorite word is "Ewwwww!"
- We cooked out for dinner every night and ate outside on the patio. Wasn't bad once the sun went lower than the trees.
- The kids played a lot of grocery store. I have been giving them empty food boxes or containers that are taped closed for them to use as their "groceries". They love it and it is something they seem to play well together at.
- We set up the craft center on the kitchen table for them daily. The boy is finally to the age where he can sit at the table with his sister and color, cut paper, glue stuff. It is nice to keep them occupied in such a way when we want to clean up dishes from dinner or something.
- I cleaned out my closet and probably removed at least 50 items. Lots of empty hangers and space! Just wish I had the time and money to shop and refill them!
- We watched a lot of Jon & Kate Plus Eight. We all like that show. It is great for hubby and I to watch since it makes us feels better about our situation. It could be harder!
Final thought:
It is important to remind ourselves that we need to balance work and family time. I often stress about making sure my kids have fun every day. I know my time is limited with them as one day they will be in school every day all day. Also, they will only be this little for so long. I want to make memories and enjoy them! I sometimes do this to a fault. I let too many other things fall to the wayside because of my devotion to letting my kids have fun and play. Oh well. As long as I do my job that keeps the bills paid! Otherwise, I can clean, organize and whatever later!

Marriage Proposals
My girl has 10 boys and 4 girls in her class. So her birthday party was mostly boys. I had one mom tell me when rsvping for the party that her son always says he is going to marry my girl so they wouldn't miss her party!
At the party another mom told me her son says he too is going to marry my girl.
The teacher at school told me yet another boy confessed his love for my girl to her. And he actually said, "I love (my girl)! I really love her."
I told another mom from the class the story today and she laughed and said,"Those boys better get in line because her son was already set to marry my girl. And he has first dibs because they have been together the longest." This is true.
So at bedtime today my girl asks me how she can stop herself from growing up. I asked why. She said because J.S from school wants to marry me and I keep telling him I don't want to. "Mommy, I don't want to grow up and get married. I just want to be with you." Sniffle. Sniffle. (from me of course)

One child in this world listens
If you are a parent you will be so amazed by the story I am about to tell you. It blew my mind and I am serious when I say I missed the opportunity for an autograph.
I was in Chick-Fil-A with the kids enjoying their indoor play structure and killing time during the witching hours. A young boy came in to play and had on a t-shirt with his schools name on it. It happens to be the school where my girl will start Kindergarten next year. So I ask his name and what grade he is is (First Grade) and introduce him to my daughter. I tell her he will be in her school next year but a different grade yada yada yada.
A little while later a striking man pops his head in and calmly says, "Jay, time to go." And then turns and goes back to his seat and lets the door slowly shut behind him. The boy I was talking to was "Jay" and he sits down, puts his shoes on and walks out politely saying goodbye on his way. I catch the eye of the mom sitting across from me and say, "Unbelieveable." She laughs.
NEVER in my parenting life have I actually seen such obedience. The child actually did exactly what his father told him too do. And I mean immediately! No hesitation. No whining. The father did not have to return to the area and REPEAT HIMSELF!
I literally wanted to run out the door and ask that man for his autograph. He wins the parenting award of the year. I want to know how in the hell he managed that!
Hmph! My girl would whine:
"JUST ONE MOOOOORRRRE MINUTE!"
"Okay, but just let me go down the slide one more time."
"I can't get my socks on myself so you have to help me"
"Let me say goodbye to that girl"
"I am not ready to go yet."
or the best is what she actually said to me that night when I told her it was time to leave - ready for this one? - "I'll tell YOU when it is time to go."
Needless to say that one landed her a quicker exodus!

Monday Mission-Impossible
Today's Mission was to accomplish a short list of things. And I will gladly accept the award for Mission-Impossible.
List was as follows:
1. Pack up christmas decorations (that have been sitting in guest bedroom for weeks!)
2. Vacuum house with new vacuum cleaner purchased over weekend
3. Clean up mess in daughter's room
4. Mop kitchen floor
5. Pay bills
Seems easy enough. Except when it is MLK day and both kids are at home with you and they haven't been outside all weekend due to unusually cold weather for Louisiana.
The girl woke up cranky and remained that way all day. She lost TV viewing rights immediately. Which of course made my day miserable. The boy was just being his new 18month old self. Climbing on everything in site. Getting into anything he could find and screaming at his sister every time she ripped a toy out of his hand. The battles were dragging on. It was time to take a get well card to the neighbor and the girl lost her mind over what to wear! Happens daily. Did I mention she will be 5 next month?
The get well card suddenly was lost after the clothing battle. After 20 minutes of looking (I knew the damn thing was in the house!) we finally found it wedged between the girls bed and the wall.
After that errand we returned home to more screaming, whining, fighting, etc. Mom couldn't take anymore. I had only one solution to save my sanity. Starbucks! Packed up the kids and even the damn dog (per the request of the boy in his toddler language) and off we went. The girl complained the whole way and the boy fell asleep. I think her complaining bores him. I know it does me! Anyway, I got my skinny mocha (don't try it, not good. Stick to the other sugar free flavors!) and drove around for awhile until we all cooled our jets!
Back home I put the boy to bed and set the girl up to paint. I started dinner, loaded the dishwasher. I checked my to do list. Not a one thing done.

Our Hobby: Finding Sleep
Last night both kids ended up in our bed. Thankfully it is king size and they are still little. The boy arrived 1 hour after we went to bed. The girl about an hour later. I spent the next four hours being kicked in the cheekbone and throat by my son who always sleeps horizontally. Usually his feet kick my husband's back and his head is jammed up under my chin on my neck almost choking me. By 4 am I had enough! I moved him back to his bed but while in transit he woke up and then required rocking to go back to sleep. So I was up another 30 minutes. Then, I carried the girl back to her bed. She too woke up and I had to convince her that when the sun came up she could come back in - just give mommy a few hours to herself!
I mean seriously, isn't sleeping the only time mom's get to themselves? I don't even get that! I want to take that time to have my own space (no one sitting on my, hanging on me or touching me!) and have my own thoughts and dreams. I want to spend that time in peace and quiet. Ugh. This mom doesn't even get a break when she sleeps! My mom always says I haven't slept in 5 years - since the first one was born.
Monday during the big LSU/OSU I was commenting to my hubby about how crazy it was our friends from Pittsburgh drove over 18 hours down here for the game. He said, "Well, that is their hobby - Football. Just like some people camp or travel or whatever." I said, "What is our hobby?" He said, "The constant quest for sleep."

Monday Jambalaya
- My BF Jen drives a Chrysler Pacifica and it is my second favorite car (behind the 2001 Saab Sport Wagon I used to drive) Anyway, Chrysler announced they are no longer going to make that vehicle anymore! I thought it was one of their best!Oh well.
- My friend Greta is organizing Operation Mardi Gras 2008. For more info go to: soldiersangelsla.org.
- If you haven't heard about it already there is a search engine out there that is powered by people. It is called Mahalo.com. Check it out.
- My husband said the recipe for never being lonely as a mom is having two kids. He couldn't have nailed it on the head any better!
- My daughter got shy around an older boy this weekend and it was weird. She literally hid from him and would not go in the same room he was in. He is 13. She is only 4! Oh lord . . . he we go.
- My 16 month old knows how to throw his sippy cup in the sink when he is done and to pick up lint, dog hair, string, paper, etc from the floor and put it in the garbage. Teach 'em to clean early! (It wasn't intentional.)
- I am mentally preparing for the holiday craziness creeping up on us. Now, if I can just find time to undecorate from Halloween and get those decoration put away. Ugh.

How did you meet daddy?
Yup! My girl popped that question tonight at dinner. A mere 4 years old and already I have to answer such questions. After I explained how I met him she followed my reply with this:
"So then you played with him, sang songs, went to the park, danced around, played games, and then told each other your names? Oh no, you are suppose to tell each other your names first!"
Ugh. Well, it sorta went like that . . .

How to decide who to marry- by kids
"So then you played with him, sang songs, went to the park, danced around, played games, and then told each other your names? Oh no, you are suppose to tell each other your names first!"
Ugh. Well, it sorta went like that . . .

It rained on my bad day!
Today did not start well. Anyone who called me this morning got an earful of my complaining (sorry mom and liz). I was miserable. My son was miserable and my girl was bored. She wanted to go to school but there was no school today. My son is teething something fierce and just followed me around all day moaning, whining, wailing, crying, eh-ing and literally holding onto the leg of my shorts so I could barely walk. I needed caffeine and had zero in the house. I wasn't about to pack up all the whiners (myself included) to run to the store. I needed a shower really bad. My son's morning nap that is usually 2 hours was 20 minutes. I was ready to throw the towel in. I took a shower and decided I was taking the kids to the parish fair and getting us out of the house! I even blow dryed my hair! I was packing up the diaper bag when suddenly it started to pour down rain! And that is when the day took a turn . . .
My daughter screamed with excitement at the sudden loud and hard rain. She pleaded with me to go out in her rain boots and slicker to play in it. Well, since it was not thundering or lightening I said, sure. Brother and I watched from inside the patio doors. Then I realized, what the heck why can't he go too. So in only his diaper I sent him out and watched from under the carport (I would normally go to, but I did my hair for the first time this week!) as they ran, stomped, splashed and fell into the large puddles in our driveway. It was raining very hard and they didn't care. They were having a ball.
No more screaming, no more crying, no more whining. Just laughter and smiles. I was smiling too.
After that things got better once back inside. My son slept for 3.5 hours and my girl colored quietly and watched a movie. I got some things done around the house.
It was all good. When brother woke up we packed up everyone in the car and decided to head out for some dinner out. A good meal somewhere. Everyone filed into their car seats nicely. I hopped in started the car . . . and the battery was dead.

My boy made me cry today
My son (a mere 14 months) made me tear up today. One of his newest things is to smack his lips in a kissing sound at us and then try to kiss us on the lips. It is cute. It is really precious when he does it to his sissy.
Well, today at naptime, I was holding him like you do an infant because his teeth were really bothering him and he couldn't get to sleep. He was all snuggled up to me and dozing off to sleep when he suddenly sat up, eyes half open and gave me the standard two lip smack notice and then planted one right on my lips. He then snuggled back down and went right to sleep.
It was as if he understands now that you kiss your loved ones before going to sleep.
* sniff sniff *

What happened on my vacation.
It happened in just an instant.
There I was all alone heading from terminal D to terminal C in the Atlanta airport. Purse backpack and a magazine my only possessions. I am walking briskly, head held high, smiling, face glowing with a nice tan, thinking of all the fun I just had with my best friend over the last five days in Florida. I glance to my left and that is when I saw her . . . She was pushing a double stroller, very stuffed LL Bean day pack on her back, husband in tow with car seat flung over his shoulder and diaper bag on his shoulder. She looked haggered, hurried and winded. She was struggling to navigate her stroller onto the people mover. After she succeeded she looked up and we locked eyes. Just for a second. We exchange knowing and longing looks. She thinking "I wish I were you - traveling all alone, free from the extra baggage children require when traveling and moving along so easily - looking happy, rested and radiant." I thinking "I've been there so many times before and know exactly how you are feeling right now" The glance ended as quick as it started and I was suddenly overcome with sadness. I missed my kids and my hubby.
For an instance I was glad I wasn't her and this time around I got to go solo. However, I also felt that longing to see the 3 most important people in my life.

Experienced parents need reply
Ok. So my husband ran into a dilemma today that I didn't have a good answer for him when he asked how to handle it. He was at Wal-Mart with both kids. 4 year old daughter needed to go potty. They do not have a family restroom. He said the men's was incredibly disgusting and there was no way he was taking her in there especially since she had to sit. And he couldn't go in the ladies room with her. So he left the store and brought her home to go potty. What should he have done? He considered asking another mom to take her in for him, but he is very protective and said he didn't see someone he thought he could trust around to help him. So, I ask you experienced parents, what do you suggest?
Also, my son is cutting lots of teeth as I write this. Is it possible i could be feeling his pain? My teeth (especially in the back) have been hurting the last few days. Kinda like men who experience morning sickness when their wives are pregnant? Possible you think?
Be heard!

A vacation by myself!
Yup! You read that correctly. This momma is taking a vacation by herself. No, that does not mean me and the kids. That means JUST ME! Alone, on a plane for the first time in . . . oh say . . . 5 years? Maybe more. The last time I traveled alone on a plane was when I flew to Atlanta and Chicago to do user testing for a startup web company I was working for. I think that was 2001 - ok 6 years ago. I might actually be able to read or sleep!
I am flying to Florida to visit my best friend for 5 days. She is taking off work and on one day we are hitting the beach (just her and I) while her kids are in school. All day on the beach by ourselves! Whooeee! No watching kids, playing with kids, feeding kids, wrangling kids. NOthing. Just us with our suntan lotion, beach chairs, cooler and lots of conversation and sunbathing!
So you are probably wondering about my kids. Never fear. This was my hubby's idea and he will be spending 5 fun-filled days with our 2 kids under 5 by himself. He has never done it before but claims if I can do it, he can do it. It should seem that way. I expect several phone calls. ;-)
I am going to try to get him to cover my blog so WE ALL can read about his days with the kids. Should be interesting!
